A healthy gut means increased immune health and decreased susceptibility to illness or disease. Diet plays a major role in maintaining a healthy gut by providing the non-digestible carbohydrates (e.g., dietary fiber) that provides energy and nutrients to gut bacteria. The bacteria produce by-products healthy for the body. Consume high fiber foods, such as whole fruits, vegetables, grains and legumes. Select fermented foods, such as yogurt, kefir, and fermented soy products, to help maintain a population of healthy gut bacteria.
