Pondering Paleo: Is a Paleolithic Diet the Key to Achieving Optimal Health and Athletic Performance?

The Paleo diet is one of the most popular diets on the market today and has a particularly strong following among fitness enthusiasts. While interesting from an historical perspective, the nutritional and health claims being made by proponents of the modern Paleo diet lack evolutionary and scientific support. Individuals seeking to improve health, minimize disease risk, and optimize athletic performance should focus on consuming a diet that provides a variety of nutrient dense foods, from within and among the different food groups, while meeting individual calorie needs.
After reading this article, the reader will be able to:
1) recount the history of the Paleo diet;
2) describe the components of the modern Paleo diet; and
3) provide a scientifically supported recommendation to clients seeking advice on whether to follow the Paleo diet.
