Description

Strategies for increasing physical activity and healthy lifestyle for individuals with HIV

by: Jason R. Jaggers, Ph.D., M.S. and Kristi King, Ph.D., M.S.

Evidence would suggest that PLWHA, regardless of disease status, can obtain similar short-term health benefits from routine physical activity reported within general populations. Research has shown significant improvements among psychological and physiological variables after moderate levels of exercise within the first 5 to 6 weeks of training. It also is clear that across various populations routine moderate-intensity physical activity reduces the risk of chronic disease and that many of these conditions have been established as major causes of morbidity and mortality among PLWHA. With clear evidence showing that physical activity can be both safe and beneficial for PLWHA it is imperative fitness professionals determine successful motivational and behavioral interventions to increase physical activity and other positive health habits such as smoking cessation, diet, and stress reduction.
